Papillio History

Incorporated in 1962, Montréal based Serum International Inc. began as an importer of scientific medical equipment specializing in ultra high quality laboratory glassware. While vacationing in Germany in 1968, founders Josef & Helga Kanner purchased Birkenstock sandals for themselves at factory headquarters in Bad Honnef on the Rhine. Impressed with Birkenstock's unique comfort and health benefits, they promptly acquired Canadian distribution rights and introduced the healthful natural comfort sandals to Canada.

Over several decades, the Kanner family successfully pioneered the Birkenstock sandal business in Canada. Almost 40 years later, Birkenstock is a popular household name recognized worldwide and Serum International remains the exclusive Canadian distributor for all things Birkenstock. Today, the founders' children Barbara & Edward are actively involved in managing business operations.

Serum International Inc offers the complete range of Birkenstock family brands including Alpro; Birki's; Betula; FP Comfort Shoes; Newalk; Papillio; Tatami & Birko Ortho. Birkenstock alone offers over 200 different styles available in two widths. Some models are available from a European children's size 24 (equivalent to a U.S. children's size 6) up to men's size 50 ('s17 1/2). Serum International Inc. also distributes Birkenstock orthopedic products, including the acclaimed blue footbed, and Birkenstock repair materials. Relying on its great tradition of manufacturing experience, the Birkenstock brands are committed to producing high quality footwear and accessories with the emphasis on natural foot health.

In 1994, Edward Kanner expanded the family business and launched an independent division specializing in the distribution of luxury European comfort footwear in the United States. To accommodate its rapid growth, in 2006 the company moved into a 53,000 square foot state-of-the-art distribution center located in Thousand Oaks, California.

In 2006, Kanner Corporation acquired exclusive United States distribution rights to Papillio featuring the original Birkenstock footbed, Heidi Klum by Papillio, and Birko-Ortho (arch supports and footbeds ideal for casual and sport shoes). Newly independent from Birkenstock, these brands continue to benefit from 230 years of Birkenstock technology and know-how while sharing state-of-the-art production facilities in Germany and Spain. Papillio products are available at select retailers nationwide.
